Meet Kylah H.: A 2021 Brown Girls Do® Inc College Scholarship Winner

Kylah H., 20, is one of two recipients of the 2021 Brown Girls Do® Inc College Scholarship. “I was always fascinated by dance since I was little,” she said. When Kylah was 9 or 10 years old, the Dance Theatre of Harlem performed in her hometown. “After watching, I was just amazed by the talent and the dancers.” About a year later, Kylah officially began her dance journey - studying ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, contemporary, musical theater, and acro.

Kylah has been following Brown Girls Do Ballet on Instagram for several years and has known about the Brown Girls Do® Inc College Scholarship since she was in high school. The rising cost of tuition and a nudge from one of her college mentors is what ultimately led her to apply. Kylah hopes other students will follow suit. “You never know what’s out there until you try it - whether you get it or not, you can at least go for it,” Kylah said. “Take as many opportunities as you can.”

Originally from New Boston, TX, Kylah is currently in her junior year at Texas Woman’s University. As a Dance major, Kylah primarily studies ballet. She’s also taken courses in lyrical, contemporary, jazz, and improv. Once she finishes her undergrad, Kylah hopes to work at a dance studio to gain more teaching experience. When the time is right, she plans to purchase studio space and open her own dance company.

“Don’t let anyone underestimate you. You are a powerful person,” she said. “If you have a goal, just go for it. Don’t let anyone stop you.”

The annual Brown Girls Do®Inc College Scholarship is awarded to full-time college undergraduate students across any field of study. You don’t have to be a dancer to apply for this scholarship, and although everyone is encouraged to apply, priority will be given to a first-generation student in college who demonstrates financial need. The application window typically opens each May, and winners are typically announced each August.
